The Port of Waterford has released the third episode of its 'Port of Waterford 1111' podcast to mark Heritage Week and 1,111 years of Ireland’s oldest port.

Hosted by Tom MacSweeney, the episode features historian Eamonn McEneaney, former Director of the Waterford Museum of Treasures. McEneaney is recognised for his work preserving Waterford’s Viking heritage and strengthening Irish-Norwegian cultural ties.

The discussion covers more than a thousand years of maritime history, from Waterford’s position as Ireland’s closest major port to Europe, to its role as a vital trading hub.

Listeners will hear about the “Three Sisters” rivers — the Barrow, Nore, and Suir — which gave the port deep access into Ireland, and about historic events from pirate attacks to the Black Death.

The episode also highlights unique local products, including “Waterford rugs,” silver coin minting, and the city’s early whiskey trade.
