The Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race fleet has paid tribute to the victims of the Bondi terror attack during today’s race, with a moving memorial enacted as yachts passed the Sydney coastline shortly after the Boxing Day start.
What began as a quiet, symbolic gesture by race organisers expanded into one of the most poignant moments of this year’s event, as scores of crews chose to scatter rose petals off the coast of Bondi Beach in remembrance.
Race organisers had initially planned for 15 yachts from the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia (CYCA) to take part in the tribute — one boat representing each life lost in the tragedy. However, the response from the wider fleet was overwhelming, with many competitors electing to participate voluntarily.
The tribute was outlined during the Compulsory Race Briefing by CYCA Commodore Sam Haynes, who said the gesture had resonated far beyond the sailing community.
“The tribute that we mentioned for the tragic events in Bondi has been very well received by the Jewish community, but also internationally recognised worldwide, and obviously here in Australia,” Haynes told the assembled fleet.
Extra rose petals were made available to crews at the briefing, with sailors encouraged to take them aboard and scatter them as they passed the coastline.
“We actually have an abundance,” Haynes said. “Mr Roses has supplied extra in case we wanted them — which I think we do.”
Just hours into a race more commonly associated with speed, rivalry and endurance, the scattering of petals provided a moment of reflection and unity. As spinnakers were hoisted and the fleet accelerated south, attention briefly shifted away from tactics and weather to remembrance and solidarity.
Now clear of Bondi, the fleet is racing south down the New South Wales coast, carrying with it the quiet weight of that shared moment. Rose petals drifting across the water marked not only a tribute, but a reminder that even in one of offshore sailing’s toughest contests, there is room for compassion and collective respect.
